Bernauer Strasse, Berlin, is home to the primary Berlin Wall Memorial (Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer), preserving a 1.4-kilometer stretch of the former border fortifications.  The street is historically unique because the boundary line ran directly along the building facades on the southern side. When the wall was erected in August 1961, the apartment blocks stood in East Berlin while the sidewalk and street belonged to West Berlin.
